Like shoes, I don't like to pay a lot for my clothes.. At a later date I will post more about that... But for now.. let's talk about ACCESSORIES!!! I love accessories.. I adore! J'adore! Whether it be shoes, purses, necklaces, scarves, tights, headbands, bracelets, earrings, corkscrews.. Love them all. The great thing about accessories is that it helps make an outfit. I tend to wear a lot of black but add a sparkly necklace and a bright pashmina and there's your outfit.
I don't like to spend a lot on accessories. I aim for 5-10 Euros per item. The most I have ever paid for a purse in 19 Euros.. Do I want a designer handbag? Of course.. Can I afford one.. no.. No I can't. I usually buy jewellery at stores like Claires, Müller (German equivalent of Boots without the over the counter drugs.. sucks ass, if you ask me) and H & M. The prices are affordable and if you spend the time to search, you will find something. Two weeks ago I bought myself a beautiful crystal flower ring. I love it and it cost 6 Euros. I was rewarding myself for having gotten through Wednesday.
I love bling (fake) and silver (fake) and gold (fake). I used to dislike yellow gold but as I have aged gracefully (ha!) I have started to love it. The two items I wear constantly are my engagement ring and wedding ring which are both in white gold (those are pretty much the only things I own that are real gold- except for a couple of pieces I have gotten from my mother). Otherwise I be mixin it up daily. Yo. The key to jewellery is to find something that pulls your outfit together. A statement piece (like a tiara) should be worn with a more subdued outfit. (I was joking about the tiara but if you like to wear one, power to you and let's meet for drinks). The more subtle the accessory the wilder the clothes. There are no rules about this but if you look like Mr. T then you should maybe rethink your look. Unless you are Mr. T and if you are reading this then "I LOVED YOU ON THE A TEAM! AND THAT INFOMERCIAL FOR THAT WEIRD COOKING GADGET! FOO"
When looking for new jewellery I try to take a mental note of my wardrobe. Is that turtleneck missing a long chain and pendant to match. Is that boobilicious top in need of some awesome earrings. Is that bright blue purse yearning for a ceramic blue bangle? Also, think about your lifestyle before you purchase. Are you a mom with a grabby child? Maybe rethink the big ass hoop earrings for another time. Do you work daily on a computer? Perhaps save the bangles or charm bracelet for the weekends or for nights out. Do you work outside? Be careful with broaches that might unhook.
As I have already mentioned, I lurve TV. I get a lot of my inspirations there. Thank you Carrie Bradshaw for the silk flower pin/hair ties that I own. I pin them to purses, tops, winter coats, in my hair everywhere and anywhere! Thank you Blair from Gossip Girl for my hairband collection- thank you Lauren Conrad from the Hills too (you were the first. I won't forget that ever). Thank you Olivia Palermo from the City for reaffirming my love of silk scarves. I will talk about stalking celebrities at a later date).
So, I don't spend a lot of money on jewellery pieces but if you want to, go for it. The piece needs to speak to you... (not literally, please lay off the LSD). But. before investing in anything that will set you back financially ie. clothing, shoes, accessories, husbands, ask yourself this: "Will I still love this/him in 20 years?". If the answer "Yes! Yes! I do!" then go for it. But don't blame me if you go into debt.
Embrace your inner Liberace and enjoy!

I must recommend saving for a designer handbag. The value you get for your money is worth it. Take, for instance, my basic, black Prada bag. I got it new (with tags and everything) from EBay for $125. I figured at that price, it needed to last about a year for it to have been a good deal. It lasted six. I now have a new one (Kate Spade, $109) and it's holding up quite well too. In fact, pretty much all of my designer bags from my shopaholic days have stayed the course. My computer bag, for instance, which basically sees daily wear in all kinds of weather, is still functioning fabulously and I've had it since 2003. So in this case, you do get what you pay for.
ReplyDeleteOh, and PS that was me (Zoe)...I have no idea which ID Google tried to use there!
ReplyDeleteGreat name Doticus! I know what you mean about quality but I am glutton. 125 for one purse of superior quality = 6 purses from the Chinese shop around the corner for me :)
