I'm on my lunch break and thought I would take a few minutes and talk about something fun. I was reading a fashion message board and was immediately drawn to a thread stating that the 90's were back. I wasn't sure if I had misread it so I entered the thread and eu mah gawd the nostalgia hit me. What a decade! When the 90's hit, it hit hard. Think about it:
Melrose Place
90210
Ally McBeal
Friends
Blossom
My So Called Life
All of these shows affected me and my sense of style. I grew up craving Rachel Green's hair cut. I wanted red hair like Angela's. I wanted to live in an apartment like the crew from Melrose. I wanted the Walsh's as my parents. I wanted to be a lawyer. It was an interesting decade that brought us Grunge, body suits, short skirts with tights and platform loafers, doc martins with floral dresses, hats with flowers, and of course great great films. Some of my favourite growing up were Empire Records (how much did I want to work in a Record Store?!), Singles (Seattle seemed aaawwesomme), Clueless (I watched that when I was 15! How could I not own a pair of knee high socks?!).
I Googled pictures of some of the above shows and films and realise how much the fashion screams the 90's. I remember certain outfits from films that I vowed I would wear when I grew up. Some I can still see as acceptable. Some not. I will never forget the white jumpsuit Marisa Tomei wore in Only You when Billy Zane tried to grab her boob. I loved that outfit. I loved Robert Downey Junior aannd Billy Zane. But that white silk outfit. I still think about it. Or when in Clueless Alicia Silverstone wore the short sleeved burgundy velvet dress. I loved it. (I loved all of Cher's outfits in that film). French Kiss? Meg Ryan's jeans and simple white tank top was perfection to me. I still can't carry off that look but oh how I searched for a pair of matching loose jeans and a white tank top. Winona Ryder in Reality Bites was a fashion icon as far as I was concerned.
Growing up on 90's TV most likely skewed my sense of appropriate outfits for work. Looking back at what Ally McBeal wore at her law firm would most likely land her a meeting with the boss about Appropriate Oufits in real life. Same goes for Heather Locklear. As a teenager watching these shows (usually from VHS tapes from my American friends) I would plan an outfit based on my favourite characters. I find that I still do this sometimes. I don't have a problem with the 90's coming back. I think a lot of the fashion was fun and for the ladies, pretty feminine.. Ok, oversized plaid shirts perhaps not so feminine but the rest was. All that I am asking though is to leave the overalls behind. Please? Osh Kosh B'Gosh..
