Last night I made macaroni and cheese and nine out of ten times when I strain pasta, I think of Adventures in Babysitting. This was a great film and was highly influential in my life. How? We'll get to that later. The general plot was this:
A girl named Chris has a date with boyfriend. He cancels, she gets roped into babysitting a teenaged boy and young girl. She goes over. Teenage boy is in love with her, his obnoxious friend crashes. She gets a call from her best friend Brenda who seems to have run away from an abusive family but is stuck in downtown Chicago and for common suburbanites this is baaaad. Chris and her charges head to downtown Chicago, meet Thor, end up spying on a car mafia unit, hilarity ensues, they almost get killed, Chris gets confused for a Playboy model, they crash a frat party, hahaha, they make it home safe and sound. All accompanied by an awesome 80's sountrack including the song Babysitting Blues. Now, tell me this film does not rock!
Some random thoughts about the film:
- I had that sweater the kid Sarah wore in the film. My Godmother made it for me and after watching the film I had a hard time wearing it. I was NOT SARAH I WAS CHRIS dammit. The funny thing is I now have the same sweater in greys from my Godmother. I even looked for the viking hat we own at 4 o'clock in the morning.
Me: rumbling in the closet
G: What are you looking for (half asleep in bed)
Me: The viking hat
G: Oh, I saw that the other day. Check the other closet.
I love that he just accepts that at 4 in the morning I would be looking for a viking hat. Bless.
- VINCENT D'ONOFRIO WAS THOR?! Holy crap! That man is my destiny or celebrity crush. Either or.
-Apparently all big cities in 80's films were cess pools of violence. Common occurrences: stabbings on the subway...
- Teenage boys choose vanity plates that say "SO COOL" and still manage to hook up. Teenage boys can also afford 5 star restaurants. This is probably how they are able to hook up.
- Brenda annoyed me.
-People with hooks for hands are people too.
How this film influenced/shaped me:
- Camel winter coats. I still love camel winter coats. I had a camel winter coat but it died. I must get a new Camel winter coat.
- When I grew up, I wanted frosted highlights like Elisabeth Shue. I have had frosted highlights many times.
- Brenda taught me that you can't buy a hotdog by transferring a cheque. Gawd she was annoying.
- That you can ad-lib a Blues song no matter how scared you may be.
- Fur coats can get you into any party. Well maybe not a PETA rally or Pamela Anderson's house but whatever.
Now I feel like making some popcorn and watching this film again. I cannot believe Vincent D'Onofrio was Thor! It's an 80's classic and I feel like this film needs to live on.
Happy Wednesday!
