I woke up this morning to find out Otho from Beetlejuice passed away. Sad. He was such a great character in a film that easily is in the top 5 films of my life.. Seriously. I remember exactly when I watched Beetlejuice for the first time. I was 9 and staying with my grandparents in Sombra. They suggested I go and pick up a film and when I saw the cover, I knew that this was the film for me.
Now, let's take a look at the cast. Winona Ryder (if you were a girl in the 80's and 90's, Winona Ryder was Hannah Montana's dark and awesomer sister times 10), Catherine O'Hara (she's just awesome in everything she does), Jeffrey Jones, Michael Keaton (hands down the best Batman ever), Geena Davis (I'm sad to say I only love her in this, Geena and her Laura Ashley dress) and Alec Baldwin (heart).
The film opens up with the loved up, trying for a baby couple living in a house that seems to have a strangely small kitchen for such a big house. They take a ride in their station wagon and end up crashing off of a covered bridge a la Madison County. They die, New Yorkers move in, the hilarity ensues. They need help, they call out Beetlejuice who ends up being evil and even more hilarity ensues. Now, here are some of my favourite scenes.. And may I add that Winona (Lydia) wore awesome outfits. Gawd, I wanted to BE her.
-When Otho and Delia do a walk through and hate the interior. Their reactions are lol. "A little gasoline... blowtorch... no problem" and this little conversation between Charles and Delia, I kinda feel like this is me and the Husband.. I'm a bad bad wife
Delia: I'm here with you. I will live with you in this hellhole, but I must express myself. If you don't let me gut out this house and make it my own, I will go insane, and I will take you with me!
Charles: [after a long pause] Yeah, well you know, maybe the house could use a little remodeling. Uh... But, why don't you just leave this room alone, okay?
- When Adam and Barbara dress up as ghosts and Lydia says her mother is sleeping with "Prince Valium" As a 9 year old I was confused as to who this Prince Valium was and if he was single. He is single but he's unavailable.
- The first dinner party. The dancing, and then the shrimp hands. I wanted ghosts in my house to liven up my dinner parties.
- Meeting Beetlejuice for the first time. It's an amazing scene and Michael Keaton must have partaken in some white powder if ya know what I mean. His lines are nuts.
- And one of my favourite lines from Otho "Don't mind her. She's still upset, because somebody dropped a house on her sister". hahahaha! Anyway.
Every October I watch Beetlejuice. It's a tradition I can't wait to pass on. I have no idea how this film was received when it first came out. I guess I could Google that information but I'm tired and my hip hurts and I'm kvetching. But one thing is for sure, this film started my love affair with Tim Burton. Hey Tim, invite me over for dinner. I bet your house is awesome. Seriously. The Husband won't watch it with me so I sit "alone (scratch that), utterly alone".
Happy Wednesday!
