Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat worms. Wowza I'm in a pissy mood. I honestly feel very not liked at work today and I guess I'm being uber sensitive but WTF?! Some moon must be in some bizarro phase or somethin' cause I ain't feeling no love from mah coworkers. Maybe it's the cold sore. Maybe she's born with it. Who knows?! Anywho. I have so much to do at work and at home and I think I might just have to pull a couple of all nighters to get through it all. Last night I completed the Russian fur hat that will be part of the centerpiece for the baby shower. I'm really really pleased with it and it took about 10 minutes to make. Pictures coming once I get a few more decorations done.
I need to brain storm for the baby shower again and there are a lot of things on my list that I have to purchase. The theme is Dr.Zhivago and I'm not sure how I am going to recreate Siberia in my aparment. I could turn down the heat but that ain't such a good idea. Is Omar Sharif still around? He'd be an awesome prop. One thing I am aiming for is a Russian tea room effect. I don't have a samivar, my mother has two (of course she does) but I have a silver (not real) tea set. It's quite old and I love it and I really don't use it enough because if we have guests, they get booze and not tea. So for the table I am aiming for a rich red table cloth, covered in a doily type material. For the low round coffee table (pictured previously in another post) I will spread fake snow on it and try to recreate a small village scene on it. I often use this table as a chance to showcase some small decorations. In order to make it functional as well, I add a large glass plate on top of the "scene". For example, for the white trash party I poured sand onto the table and added small toy cars to make it into a monster truck theme.
I'm going to use red as the primary colour for this party so I will keep my eyes open for anything red or old school Russian. Good places to check out are flea markets. Naschmarkt is a large outdoor market here in Vienna. One part is just food but if you continue furter down on a Saturday, you will hit an immense flea market. I'm going hunting this weekend to see what I can find!
Another thing I need to work on is the St.Basil's papier mache. I saved toilet paper rolls which will act as the different "turrets". I was supposed to work on it last weekend but got sidetracked by shiny things. So far here is the menu for the partay and one friend is making a Russian salad and another friend is making borscht. I hate to say it but I hate borscht. I lived in Moscow for two years and I was surrounded. Gah!
The Menu:
Borscht
Russian Salad
Homemade Blini's with caviar and sour cream
Shashlik (type of Russian kebab)
Khachapuri (it's Georgian- a cheese bread.. holy crap is this stuff awesome!!)
Pelmeni (dumplings)
Roasted Potatoes with a vodka based sauce on the side
Excellent comrade! I never practice a dish for a party. I like the challenge of making things for the very first time. Makes me craaazy and excited! Wish me luck!
My lunch break is winding down and now I am ready for the work. Da.

ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure that Veronica has Samovar so you prob could borrow it. Also I can bring caviar! I have red only, no black, sorry, but at least it is the real Russian stuff. I have a few cans at home.
Of course it is going to rock :) That would be great if you want to bring the caviar! No worries about the Samovar, all surfaces will be covered in other decorations :)Congrats on your 6 months!!
