Party Planning- Toga Party

It's my birthday in about 5 weeks and for the past couple of years I haven't really planned much for the day. I used to feel a little wierd about inviting people out to celebrate the birth of me. But all that has changed my peeps. I'm celebrating my last year of my 20's with a Bacchus inspired event. Look at me using mythology. Not just a pretty face huh? The theme this year is Toga; a little Belushi, a little Greek, some windex, and bed sheets. Yes. Because I am organised (read: anal) I like to start to plan the menu a few weeks in advance. I write lists and lists of ingredients and update them daily.

This is the menu so far:

Moussaka (said in a lion king voice. say it with me. Moussaka)
Souvlaki
Halloumi salad
Filled baked tomatoes
Tzatzikizkzi
Ground pork kebab thingies with a mint joghurt sauce
Pitas
Roasted potatoes

Of course this will change over time but these are the main dishes. In a couple of days I will make a grocery store list and will keep adding to it. The next important step is thinking about the decorations. Finding party supplies in Vienna can be a pain. Unless you want images of cartoon mice, it's pretty much impossible to find themed crap here. So, what's a girl to do? Make her own damn decorations.

Greece.. Blue sea, sun, good food, friendly people, ouzo, antiquities, gods, olives.. Ok. There's the first part of brainstorming. I write these key words down and go from there.

Blue sea: blue table cloth- have one. It's a nice one. Don't spill on it.
Sun: still thinking, thinking
Good food: Greek food, take old wine bottles and wrap with postal string.
Friendly People: Greek music needed, Greek flag needed, Greek friend needed
Ouzo: Believe we already own that
Antiquities: Buy a toy horse and spray paint it gold. Have two stone reliefs from Rhodos.
Gods: Recreate Greek drama masks from papier mache.
Olives: Find fake olive branches. Spray paint a couple in gold for the centrepiece.

Ok, so there's my base. I'll usually wake up in the middle of the night with an idea and add it to my list. I'll have to get started this weekend in order to get most things done but I live for this.
Now, how can I make a life sized Trojan horse.....

  1. I am so sad that I am missing a toga party (assuming, of course, that I am cool enough to have been invited to one)! Animal House was a pivotal film in my upbringing and I have always wanted to attend one (and dump mustard of myself at the end of the party). Have a great time!

  3. Any tips on where to buy cheap white sheets?

  4. Try the cheap shops like Pro Cent or Echt Gunstig. Landstrasse, Favoriten and Tabor should have them.. probably around 3-4 Euros. Another option is a cheap curtain..
