Random Memories

Now, I must confess that I'm going through quite a nostalgic period now. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that a)I'm getting older and b)there seems to be a whole lot of old stuff being shown on TV. This weekend was all about the 80's. The Husband and I watched VH1 Classics all about the 80's and we were hooked.. The randomest comment ever made by the Husband was made last weekend and the man is quite a random comment maker so it rocked my world for its winning randomness. We were watching a Genesis video and the Husband said out loud "I bet they used to watch Alf." Genesis + Alf ? Yes! I love him more and more each day. The man loves Alf. I'm tempted to throw him an Alf birthday one year. If anyone mentions Alf to him he gets all excited, that and Thundercats. God I love that man.

In keeping with our nostalgic weekend, we stumbled upon The Gremlins on TV. It was released in 84 so I would have been 3 and we lived in Communist Romania so I probably didn't get to see it for a few more years. Damn communists always ruining stuff. I cannot remember the exact time I saw it but I do know that I wanted Gizmo and I wanted him bad. As the Husband and I watched it we kept saying "Wait for it" and then would laugh hysterically when something happened that we remembered. We are easily amused. Gremlins is a great Christmas film and here is a list of my favourite scenes. SPOILERS.

- Gizmo reading a comic book with 3D glasses. I mean, it's cool enough that this ball of lint can hang out on a bed and hold a comic, but with 3D glasses? Come on!
- The Dad and his inventions. Need I elaborate?
- The Bar scene. This is epic. You have poker, and a flasher, and full out binge drinking and the cool mysterious jazz loving gremlin.
- The pool scene. I've asked and this is by far the most potent of terrifying scenes for adults aged 29-35. Nowadays it looks like a specialty Japanese toilet, with steam and light show.
- The movie theatre. Oh, this was a great scene. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves! Gremlins! Popcorn! Win!
-Gizmo in a sports car. This is probably my favourite scene of all time. Seriously. Gizmo and a car.

The film in of itself is a classic. It's a horror film with heart and rodents that turn into lizards. I'm not sure if this was geared towards children but I kind of find it hard to believe that adults would have flocked to see this one. But 80's films were awesome with the random boob shots that made absolutely no sense. They just don't make films like The Gremlins anymore. Le Sigh. If you haven't seen it then run to Netflix and download. I would have been shocked a few months ago if someone hadn't seen it, but then my friend Lucy hadn't seen Dirty Dancing and that just threw me for a loop. She finally watched it. We can hang out now.

I also recently watched Teen Witch which I will review in a couple of weeks. That film rocked my world. Lace and witchcraft.

Happy Thursday!

  1. Jennifer Grey will be on this season of dancing with the stars. Not sure if that is cheating or not.

  2. I feel like 'Gremlins' is just one big FU at Christmas overall, which is part of what cracks me up about it. I mean, the dad caught in the chimney? For 3 days? That's just anti-Christmas is what that is. It's like Spielberg finally vented his frustration at having to celebrate boring old Hanukkah while all the cool kids got Christmas presents.

And hey, I know for a fact that in Communist Romania you did get 'Dallas.' I mean, that is one of the all-time greats there. Maybe its subtle awesomeness was not so apparent to you when you were 3, though.

Also, I'm pretty sure that 'ET' was shown. This I learned from a Romanian ex-BF who remembers seeing 'ET' as a child. Same ex-BF was taken to see 'The Return of the Jedi' during his English as a Second Language classes when he was 8 or something and had recently moved to Canada. Because Jabba the Hutt is something you want children who don't understand the language to see.

  3. Luvbeers- I agree.. But maybe they'll throw in a nice Swayze tribute..

Zoe- We had a tape of the first Star Wars in Romania. I thought Chewbacca was my godfather. In other news, did you hear about the Californian doctor who died in a chimney last week while stalking her boyfriend. Yeah, I automatically thought about Gremlins. I'm a very bad person.
